The best batch of Huevo de Toro tomato sets a new record and is auctioned for 4,000 euros in Coín

Coín hosts the traditional Tasting-Contest-Auction for the best Huevo de Toro tomato whose first prize went to Daniel García Plaza. The bid, for the benefit of Diabetes Cero and the people of Ukraine, has been for José Cobos Coin once again makes a historical record in the Auction for the best batch of Huevo de Toro tomato. The first prize in this traditional contest that takes place every August 15 has been for the farmer Daniel García Plaza and in whose auction it has been sold for 4,000 euros, a figure never before recorded in this contest. The event, the culmination of the Huevo de Toro tomato promotion campaign for this summer 2022, took place this morning in the San Agustín de Coín park. Organized by the town council, the GDR Valle del Guadalhorce and the Malaga Provincial Council, with the collaboration of the Huevo de Toro Association of Tomato Producers, the event has brought together hundreds of people in this environment that is being recovered as a stage for the auction after two years of pandemic. The contest was attended by the mayor Francisco Santos; the first vice president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Margarita del Cid; the delegate of Agriculture of the Junta de Andalucía, Fernando Fernández Tapia-Ruano; the president of the producers' association, José Guerrero; the godfather of the contest, Antonio Carrillo, president of the Carta Malacitana association, and councilors of the government team in the Coín City Council.

The mayor of the city, Francisco Santos, has highlighted that the tomato is "the star of the coina garden", being an example of the richness of this land. “We always say it, Málaga has a lot to offer and for which to be recognized nationally and worldwide, and our garden has a lot to say. These products are of high quality and that is why we are dependent on Málaga", he assured, at the same time as he wanted to dedicate a few words of thanks to the daily effort of the field workers who "are the ones who truly make this meeting possible". For her part, the first vice president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Margarita del Cid, has highlighted the constant support of said entity for the Huevo de Toro tomato, the Coineña orchard and the entire Guadalhorce region. She recalled that the Diputación, through the promotional brand Sabor a Málaga, "works intensely to promote the consumption of seasonal and local products and to promote sustainable, responsible and profitable agriculture".

Coín Fruit and Vegetable Contest

The winning batch of the Huevo de Toro 2022 best tomato contest was the one presented by Daniel García Plaza, which was awarded at public auction to José Cobos, from Bodegas el Pimpi, for the record amount of 4,000 euros, an amount that goes to the Diabetes CERO foundation and help the Ukrainian people. The tasting has had a jury made up of twelve professionals of recognized prestige in the field of gastronomy and two people from the public. In addition, the Agricultural Biodiversity Fair and the Coín Fruit and Vegetable Contest have been held, in which Antonio Martín Guzmán's vegetables -onions- and Cristóbal Guerrero Hevilla's fruits -melon- have been awarded. The prize for the most spectacular specimen has also gone to Cristóbal Guerrero Hevilla, with a 221-kilo pumpkin. For her part, Rocío Jiménez has won the photography contest and awards have been granted to the García Farfán family and the president of the Malaga Gastronomic Academy, Manuel Tornay. The councilor from Coin wanted to thank all the participating and collaborating institutions for "the great work and joint effort for our region." "Recently when people talked about tourism in Malaga, they only thought about sun and sand, thanks to the Provincial Council and the inland municipalities we have demonstrated the great potential of the inland, our zero kilometer products and our gastronomy, which represent a further attractiveness important and increasingly significant in our province”, he has assessed. Thus, he also wanted to thank the special collaboration of the Malaga Provincial Council, farmers and people like Pepe Cobos who for a decade have trusted and collaborated so that the Huevo de Toro tomato "is recognized today throughout the world and is in the best kitchens in Europe”.
